7 Verses to Give You Comfort
This month has been hard for my family. 3 weeks ago, I had another car collision. My reliable car was totaled, went to the ER through the Trauma Center & I’ve physical therapy again. Then 3 days ago, I had a medical incident. I was getting injections for spasticity & I passed out on the bench. When I woke up, I was on the floor & the doctor, nurses & admin were crowded in the room, ready to call 911. My heartbeat & blood pressure were very low & had to stay there for hours to get normal ranges again. I've had injections for years, so why now?
My husband is struggling with his job, my daughters are in the dreadful teenage years & my health is declining. Right now, my cravings for alcohol are strong. At least with alcohol, I would be numb from this crazy life, right?? But I was so wrong in this logic. I tried, but it always failed. I feel like I’m grasping everything that I learned & felt about Jesus, how He is with me every step. How He loves me and I should trust Him. So why do I feel empty & lost?
I turn to the Word. These 7 verses have been my comforter in my life lately:
“For I have given rest to the wearing & joy to the sorrowing.” - Jeremiah 31:25
“Anyone who listens to my teaching & follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents & the floodwaters rise & the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.” - Matthew 7:24-25
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” - Proverbs 3:5
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.” - Psalms 34:18-19
“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord & have made the Lord their hope & confidence.” - Jeremiah 17:7
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you & help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10
“For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort & salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer.” - 2 Corinthians 1:5-6
I don’t know what my future holds, but I know that alcohol is not the answer, nor isolation & self-pity. I’ll read the Word, pray without ceasing, call wise women, meet with the pastor, go to church & learn everything about Christianity. If I stop with anything on my list, I’ll be sucked back into this broken world so fast. I don't feel like I've any wisdom with my audience this month, but my vulnerability to share my experiences may encourage other people to keep turning to the Lord, especially when life is hard. Call for Him. Read your bible. Your questions are answered if you really search for them in the Word.
